What Is Automated Parking and How Does It Work?

Automated parking is a computer controlled system of mechanical lifts and shuttles that simultaneously park and retrieve numerous vehicles with little or no human involvement. Automated parking maximizes real estate development by providing twice the number of parking spaces compared to a conventional concrete garage of the same size (by the elimination of ramps, alleys and driveways). Alternatively, automated parking uses half the cubic feet compared to a conventional garage to park the same number of vehicles. The key benefit of A.P.T.’s automated parking system is that multiple movements occur simultaneously on various parking levels creating a greater throughput of vehicles.

To access an automated parking garage, a driver need only park a vehicle in the entry cabin of the garage which is similar in look and feel to a residential garage. Sensors measure the height, length and width of each vehicle prior to accepting the vehicle into the garage. There is no risk of dents, dings, damage, and theft because engines are turned off and nothing (and no person) ever touches the vehicle during storage and retrieval. Automated parking garages contain as few as forty spaces and as many as two thousand parking spaces and can be built aboveground, belowground or both. Automated parking garages are architecturally pleasing because any façade can be attached to resemble the surrounding neighborhood or connecting building.
